Eli Manning has outdueled Tom Brady in big moments before, but now the page is turned to rookie first-round pick Daniel Jones as New York’s new QB counterpart. Consider Jones was only 10 years old when Brady’s undefeated Patriots were shocked by Manning and the Giants in Super Bowl 42 after’ the ’08 season.
How will Jones fare against a Bill Belichick defense known for befuddling green starters and will there be any defensive answers for Brady on the other side?
Here’s everything to know about betting on Giants vs. Patriots in Week 6, including updated odds, trends and our prediction.
The Patriots opened with a slightly less number in their favor, but it’s ballooned as the Giants’ injuries have made them severely shorthanded offensively for the game.
Giants vs. Patriots all-time series
The teams have played only 12 times, with the Giants and Patriots each going 6-6. Two of those came in Super Bowls 42 and 46, when the Giants upset the Patriots twice, 17-14 and 21-17. When they met at the Giants in ’15, the Patriots won by a point, 27-26.
Three trends to know
— 63 percent of bettors are all over the Patriots and their latest big number.
— Despite what might be some windy and rainy conditions at Gillette Stadium tonight, 62 percent of bettors like the game going over the point total.
— The Patriots won and covered as final 18-point favorites over the Dolphins and 16-point favorites over the Redskins. The Giants have either won and covered or lost and failed to cover in their games this season.
Three things to watch
Giants WRs Tate and Slayton and who else?
The Patriots’ defense is red-hot and gets a massive break with running backs Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman, wide receiver Sterling Shepard and tight end Evan Engram all out for the Giants. That leaves Golden Tate, who just came back from suspension last week, and rookie Darius Slayton, who scored against the Vikings last week, as Jones’ two most viable weapons. The Giants will need something big from backup tight end Rhett Ellison and third-string running back Jonathan Hillman to have any chance to be competitive.
Patriots WRs Edleman and Gordon and everyone else
Phillip Dorsett (hamstring) will miss the chance to attack a weak Giants secondary, but Julian Edelman, coming off the Patriots’ first 100-yard receiving game of the season, should have another big game working in the slot while Gordon, facing either Janoris Jenkins or rookie DeAndre Baker on the perimeter, is overdue to burn a cornerback outside for a big scoring play. The Patriots had no problems spreading the ball around with Brady last week to backs, tight ends and wideouts and he pretty much will like every matchup he sees.
Belichick vs. the Giants
From everything Belichick has said this week about the Giants’ organization and personnel, he has a lot of respect for the organization for which he was once a multiple Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator. It will be interesting then to see how much the Patriots step on the gas on both sides of the ball, given their history of close games with the Giants. The Redskins game should be an indication they won’t let up with little resistance.
Stat that matters
Brady is 11-2 in games played on a Thursday, either on Thanksgivings or any other nights. He has thrown 28 touchdowns to only 5 INTs in those games for a 107.2 rating. The only day he’s better is Saturday, when he’s 7-0 with a 109.5 passer rating.
Giants vs. Patriots prediction
The Patriots are loaded to dominate this matchup and will keep rolling by putting the game away early with big pass plays before pounding away with the run, holding an insurmountable lead at some point in the fourth quarter. The Giants have limited sources of offense and Jones will have his roughest game as a rookie.
